The UnProfessor on Future Shock - on Being from a Time when we still had...
On being from a time when there was more time.... when time was still there to be had, and not everyone in a rush and without any time... time is money, and ever since that became a truism for our culture it means that nobody has any time... other than the very rich, and the very poor....
it's all how you put your time to use that matters in the long run... and where we once thought we had millennia of advanced and advancing civilization to go yet... it not looks like we'll be very lucky to survive the whole century... with untold hundreds of millions dying by mid-century due to climate change and sea-level rise and more.
And yet somehow there's still planners here intent on building new bridges or tunnels to make possible ongoing and increasing development on floodplain.... all of which will be underwater in a half a century.... same with Ruskin Dam... 104' high... but sea level rise if Greenland lets go would be 60m... so Stave Lake above Stave Falls Dam would become part of the sea......
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only sane one around here... I'm an engineers' kid and grew up learning about geography and dams and such and saw climate change coming when I was a kid.... but people are still building and planning like there's no tomorrow... well, they're planning for a tomorrow they think is going to happen but as they're not looking at the eco-geographic realities things like the Massey Tunnel Expansion or replacement are expensive fools' errands.
Madness, in other words. But who said applied science was sane? We already know it's not moral....
